## Snapshot

Mrs. Ives's French waitress, composed and precise on the stand, testifies about a vanished note and the household's uneasy final days.

## Who they are

Melanie Cordier, a waitress of eight years' experience, came to Mrs. Ives's employ through Mrs. Stephen Bellamy's recommendation and resigned the day after the murder, dissatisfied with something she will not quite name. On the fourth day she recounts placing a note inside a law book in Mr. Ives's study, only to find it gone. Her unruffled testimony and careful evasions make her one of the trial's most intriguing minor witnesses.
