Chapter 1
Book I: The House with the Open Window
Robert Holt, a desperate and unemployed clerk, wanders the streets of London at night, driven by hunger and cold. He discovers a house with an open window and enters, seeking shelter. Inside, he encounters a terrifying, beetle-like creature that exerts a hypnotic power over him, forcing him to obey its commands. The creature compels Holt to commit a burglary at the home of a prominent politician, Paul Lessingham.
Chapter 2
Outside
Robert Holt, a desperate and starving man, is turned away from the Fulham casual ward after a long day of fruitless job-seeking. A fellow tramp suggests he try another workhouse, but Holt wanders aimlessly through the rain, weakened by three days of fasting. In his extremity, he notices an open window in a nearby villa, which presents a possible opportunity for relief.
Chapter 3
Inside
Robert Holt, driven by desperation and hunger, enters an open window seeking shelter from the rain. Inside the dark room, he encounters a terrifying, unseen creature with glowing eyes that climbs his body with spider-like legs, inducing paralyzing fear. After shaking it off, he tries to flee but is stopped by a light struck behind him.
Chapter 4
III: The Man in the Bed
Robert Holt, a destitute and desperate clerk, breaks into a house seeking shelter and encounters a strange, foreign figure lying in bed. The creature exerts a hypnotic control over Holt, forcing him to obey commands, undress, eat, and drink. Holt is overwhelmed by the being's penetrating eyes and feels his will and identity dissolve, culminating in a loss of consciousness.
Chapter 5
A Lonely Vigil
Robert Holt, paralyzed and conscious but unable to move, endures a night and day of terror in a dark room after being attacked by the Beetle. He is examined and kissed by the creature, left alone as callers come and go, and witnesses a strange animal-like visitor that tries to enter through the window. At night, a fight occurs outside, the front door is unlocked, and the Beetle returns, commanding Holt to stand.
