First appearance: iii the law and politics
As a supporting figure in The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, President Harding is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Gracious host in Marion; discusses cabinet and policies; later falls ill and departs for Alaska.
Harding exists in Coolidge's account mostly through the shadow of his death: the scattered Cabinet, the rotunda funeral, the train to Marion, Ohio. Coolidge describes a grief-stricken nation and a widow whose bearing won universal sympathy, and notes how Mrs. Harding's kindness consoled him and Mrs. Coolidge. Harding's absence is the hinge on which Coolidge's own presidency begins.
