# Minnie — The Autobiography of an Idea character guide

> Minnie in The Autobiography of an Idea by Louis H. Sullivan.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-child

## Snapshot

Louis's younger sister, a steady presence in the family's wandering New England years, sharing the small domestic world her brother's ambitions keep pulling him away from.

## Who they are

Minnie belongs to the household that moves from Newburyport to Halifax and back to Boston, part of the ordinary family life against which Louis's extraordinary inner world plays out. She is a companion of childhood scenes rather than a rival or confidante, and the book treats her with the same affectionate but unsentimental eye it turns on the rest of the family. Her presence reminds the reader that the future architect was also simply a boy with a sister, a fact the grander narrative of destiny can easily eclipse.
