## Who they are

Euphemus arrives from Tainarus, child of Europa and the sea-god Poseidon, and his speed on foot is unlike any other man's. The poem describes him running across the water's face, his soles barely wetting the spray, a marvel that marks him as a favorite of the sea. On a voyage that depends on reading winds and currents, his divine parentage and uncanny swiftness make him both a practical asset and a sign of Poseidon's interest in the Argo's fate.
