> Chalciope in The Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Chalkiopê

**First appearance:** 0002-book-iii

## Snapshot

Aeëtes's elder daughter, whose stranded sons bring Greek strangers to Colchian shores and whose plea to her sister will open a fatal door.

## Who they are

Chalciope is a mother and sister caught between her father's suspicious court and the shipwrecked Argonauts her own sons have befriended. When the strangers arrive seeking the Fleece, she becomes their unlikely advocate inside the palace, pressing Medea to help them. Her loyalty to her children pulls against her loyalty to Aeëtes, and that fracture is what lets the Argonauts in.
