Chapter 1
The Ambassadors
Lambert Strether, a middle-aged American editor, is dispatched by his wealthy fiancée, Mrs. Newsome, to Paris to retrieve her son Chad and bring him back to the family business. Upon arrival, Strether finds Chad transformed by European culture and begins to question his own mission and values.
Chapter 2
Book I
Lambert Strether arrives in Chester, England, where he meets Maria Gostrey, an acquaintance who becomes his guide and confidante. They discuss his mission to retrieve Chad Newsome, the son of his fiancée Mrs. Newsome, from Paris. Strether also reunites with his old friend Waymarsh, who is weary and resistant to European influence. The chapter establishes Strether's sense of duty and his growing awareness of the complexities of his task.
Chapter 3
I
Strether visits Madame de Vionnet in her Paris apartment, reflecting on the aftermath of Sarah Pocock's stay and his own complex feelings. He receives a petit bleu from Madame de Vionnet requesting a meeting, which he accepts, and during their conversation he grapples with the implications of Chad and Madame de Vionnet's relationship and his own role in it.

Strether and Madame de Vionnet have an intense emotional conversation. She expresses her fear of losing him and her anguish over how he perceives her, revealing her vulnerability and desperation. Chapter III
Strether waits for Chad to contact him after Madame de Vionnet's visit, but days pass without word. He fills the time by taking Maria Gostrey on outings around Paris, enjoying a 'happy interlude' of unspoken understanding. Maria eventually reveals that Madame de Vionnet has visited her, confirming that Strether now knows the truth about Chad's relationship. Maria reflects on her own restraint in not interfering for personal gain, and Strether realizes he has not swung back to Mrs. Newsome's principles despite the shock.
