## Who they are

Pallas rides out from his father's humble kingdom as Aeneas's ally, eager to prove himself and unaware of how much his life means to the man beside him. He is the son Evander surrenders to the war, and Aeneas accepts him as a charge that will weigh on every battle he fights. His presence turns the alliance with Evander into something personal, and the reader feels the cost of the war most sharply through the old king who waits at home.
