# The Fox — The Adventures of Pinocchio character guide

> The Fox in The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0011-xii-pinocchio-receives-a-present-of-five-gold-pieces

## Snapshot

A smooth-talking swindler who befriends Pinocchio, praises his gold, and leads him straight toward the Field of Miracles.

## Who they are

The Fox meets Pinocchio at the Red Crawfish inn and immediately sizes him up as a mark, flattering him, feeding him, and promising that buried coins will grow into trees of gold. He travels with the Cat, and the two of them stage a fake robbery and a fake rescue to keep the puppet's trust while they plot to take his money. His oily charm is the book's clearest portrait of the con artist, and his scenes with Pinocchio show how easily a boy who wants to be clever is fooled by someone who tells him he already is.
