First appearance: xxvi the terrible dog fish
As a supporting figure in The Adventures of Pinocchio, The Dogfish is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Described by the Dolphin as enormous, bigger than a five-storied house, and a threat to the waters.
The Dogfish is an enormous shark-like beast so old and afflicted with asthma that he sleeps with his mouth open, swallowing ships and men alike. When he engulfs Geppetto and later Pinocchio, the two are reunited inside his belly, where the puppet discovers his father alive. The monster's cavernous body becomes the setting for Pinocchio's bravest act, transforming a devouring terror into the stage for his final proof of love and courage.
