## Who they are

Master Cherry is the first person in the book to be frightened by the piece of wood that will become Pinocchio, and his terror is comic and human: he hears a voice, looks for it, and finds no one. He and Geppetto bicker like old men in a piazza, trading insults and blows over the log before Geppetto takes it home to carve. His brief appearance sets the story's tone of rough village comedy and shows that even before Pinocchio exists, he is already causing trouble.
