Concepts
Ideas that structure The Acquisitive Society by R. H. Tawney — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Function vs. Rights
The book contrasts a society organized around social purpose and function—where rights derive from service—with an 'acquisitive society' based on absolute individual rights to property and gain, regardless of social contribution.
Critique of the Acquisitive Society
Tawney argues that modern industrial civilization is built on the pursuit of wealth as an end in itself, divorcing gain from service, which leads to inequality, misdirection of production, and moral decay.
Property and Privilege
The text examines how property rights, especially passive ownership (e.g., rentiers, shareholders, landowners), create unearned income and privilege, functioning as a form of private taxation without corresponding social function.
Industry as a Profession
Tawney proposes reorganizing industry on the model of a profession, where work is governed by standards of service, competence, and ethical conduct, rather than by the profit motive and shareholder interests.
Inequality and Waste
The book highlights how extreme inequality diverts productive resources toward luxury goods for the rich while basic needs of the majority remain unmet, resulting in economic waste and social inefficiency.
Industrial Democracy and Freedom
Tawney argues that political freedom is impossible without industrial freedom, criticizing the 'industrial feudalism' that concentrates authority in owners and denies workers control over their working lives.
Moral Purpose of Economics
The book insists that economic activity must be subordinated to ethical and social ends, rejecting the notion that the pursuit of self-interest automatically produces public good, and calling for a revaluation of values.
