Concepts
Ideas that structure The Absolute at Large by Karel Čapek — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Technology and Religion
The book explores the fusion of industrial technology with the divine, as Marek's Karburator mechanically releases the Absolute, leading to mass religious experiences, miracles, and the commodification of God.
Overproduction and Economic Collapse
The Absolute's infinite, uncontrolled production of goods (like tacks) causes market saturation, devaluation, and the breakdown of distribution, illustrating the absurdity of boundless plenty without economic order.
Human Nature and Morality
The release of the Absolute exposes human flaws—greed, hypocrisy, and selfishness—while also triggering genuine altruism and religious fervor, highlighting the duality of human response to divine presence.
Religious Conflict and War
The universal spread of the Absolute leads to competing national and sectarian claims over 'the true God,' sparking ideological wars, as seen in the battles and diplomatic disputes over whose God is legitimate.
The Absurdity of Absolutes
The narrative satirizes the concept of absolute truth or divinity, showing how infinite energy, when unleashed without limits, becomes chaotic, wasteful, and destructive rather than benevolent or orderly.
Industrial Capitalism and Labor
The Karburator disrupts traditional labor and capitalism, making workers redundant and factories uncontrollable, while the Absolute's 'divine communism' forces a reevaluation of ownership, value, and work.
The Role of the Farmer
Amidst economic chaos, the farmer is portrayed as a pragmatic anchor, refusing to give away goods and maintaining scarcity, thus saving society from total collapse through traditional market instincts.
Skepticism and Faith
Characters like Bondy and Marek oscillate between rational skepticism and overwhelming religious experience, questioning the nature of miracles, thought-reading, and the viability of a world saturated with God.
