Chapter 1
The Homecoming
The chapter opens with a serene description of the prairie and the McLaughlin homestead, where children play and await the return of older siblings from school. Their quiet is broken when they spot a team of horses approaching, carrying a soldier in blue—Wully McLaughlin, returning from the Civil War. The family reunites with joy and relief, but Wully's wounded foot reveals the cost of war. That night, he shares with his parents the trauma of battle and the death of his brother Allen, a grief that overshadows his homecoming.
Chapter 2

Wully McLaughlin, home from the Civil War, is recovering on his family's Iowa prairie farm. His father, John McLaughlin, remains passionately devoted to the land, dreaming of its potential. To occupy himself, Wully agrees to visit Jeannie McNair on an errand for his mother. At the McNair cabin, he is stunned to see Chirstie, Jeannie's daughter, now grown into a beautiful young woman. Despite his awkwardness, he accompanies her to fetch water, marking the beginning of a significant encounter.
Chapter 3

Wully McLaughlin returns home from the Civil War in March, after more than three months in hospitals, and is met by his father. They travel through rain and mud to the family farm, where Wully is warmly welcomed by his mother and siblings. Despite his exhaustion, he is eager to see Chirstie, but when he rides to her house the next day, she rejects him coldly, refusing his marriage proposal and sending him away in confusion and heartbreak.

Wully McLaughlin discovers that Peter Keith has seduced and impregnated Chirstie. In a rage, he confronts Peter, who suggests Wully marry her himself. Wully wrestles with his desire for revenge and his love for Chirstie, ultimately deciding to marry her to save her from shame. He also recalls an earlier encounter where Chirstie armed herself with a gun, fearing him.
