Ideas that structure Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Proletarian Revolution and Dictatorship
The book centers on the Bolshevik-led insurrection and the establishment of the 'Dictatorship of the Proletariat,' portraying it as the fundamental struggle of the international labor movement, as endorsed by Lenin.
Class Conflict and Polarization
A deep and violent divide is shown between the bourgeoisie, landowners, and 'moderate' Socialists on one side, and the workers, soldiers, and poor peasants on the other, with each group fighting for control of the state and economy.
Peasant Question and Land Reform
The narrative highlights the critical role of the peasantry, who constituted the majority of Russia's population, and the Bolsheviks' efforts to win their support through land decrees, peasant congresses, and emissaries, despite initial political backwardness.
Struggle for Legitimacy and Power
The book documents the intense competition between rival institutions—the Soviets, the Provisional Government, the Municipal Duma, and various Central Committees—each claiming to be the legitimate authority, often resolved through force and political maneuvering.
Workers' Control and Economic Transformation
A major theme is the Bolshevik push for workers' control over industry, nationalization of banks, and a unified economic plan, presented as essential for dismantling capitalist exploitation and organizing production for the people's needs.
Counterrevolution and Civil War
The narrative details the immediate and violent opposition to the Bolshevik takeover, including Kerensky's military campaign, the formation of the Committee for Salvation, and the outbreak of street fighting in Moscow and other cities, foreshadowing a broader civil war.
National Self-Determination and Emancipation
The book emphasizes the Bolshevik policy of granting equality and sovereignty to the diverse peoples of Russia, contrasting it with Tsarist oppression and the Provisional Government's distrust, as a means to build a voluntary union of revolutionary forces.
