## Snapshot

The Bolshevik leader whose name is both a rallying cry and an accusation in every crowded hall, he stakes the revolution on the workers and then scrambles to win the peasants.

## Who they are

Lenin is the strategist behind the October seizure, but Reed shows him as a man whose authority is still contested—heckled as a German agent, defended by workers displaying wounds from the July days. His problem is arithmetic: the Bolsheviki have only a small following among the peasants who make up more than eighty percent of Russia, so every decree, from the Land decree to the Instructions to Provincial Emissaries, is an attempt to convert urban victory into rural consent. That gap between the city and the village is the central political tension of the book's middle arc.
