# General Lavr Kornilov — Ten Days That Shook the World character guide

> General Lavr Kornilov in Ten Days That Shook the World by John Reed.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Kornilov, General Kornilov, Kornilovitz

**First appearance:** 0011-i-background

## Snapshot

The counter-revolutionary general whose failed coup haunts every Bolshevik appeal, invoked as the specter that justifies vigilance, discipline, and the suppression of demonstrations.

## Who they are

Kornilov never appears in the passages as a living presence; he is a name the Tsay-ee-kah uses to frighten workers and soldiers into obedience, warning that disorder will let the Dark Forces restore him and crush the Soviets. His shadow sharpens the dilemma of the revolutionary left: every spontaneous demonstration risks becoming the pogrom that would usher in reaction. That threat—counter-revolution wearing the mask of 'Law and Order'—shapes the defensive logic of the Bolsheviks in the book's middle chapters and makes Kornilov a constant, invisible pressure on events.
