# Tarzan — Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle character guide > Tarzan in Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Tarzan of the Apes, Lord Tarzan, the Lord Viscount Tarzan, Sir Tarzan **First appearance:** 0000-i-tantor-the-elephant ## Snapshot The ape-man who drops from the trees into an intruding safari and calmly divides it in two, reminding armed white hunters that his jungle keeps its own law. ## Who they are Tarzan rules his country less by force than by reputation: porters and askari obey him before they ever see him, and even seasoned adventurers concede they would leave if he asked. He is a guest of no one, yet he extends courtesies — allowing a young photographer to roam freely while expelling a blustering hunter who treats the jungle as a trophy case. His authority, and the vengeance he quietly promises, set the moral weather for everything that follows. ## Relationships ### [James Hunter Blake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/james_hunter_blake) _friendship_ James and Tarzan are steadfast friends and allies, working together to overcome common threats. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ Nasrany and Tarzan are direct enemies, with Nasrany frequently attempting to capture or kill Tarzan. ### [Fahd Ibn Jad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/fahd_ibn_jad) _rivalry_ Fahd and Tarzan are antagonists, clashing over power and territory in the jungle. ### [Zeyd Ibn Jad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/zeyd_ibn_jad) _rivalry_ Tarzan and Zeyd are opponents, with Zeyd often challenging Tarzan's authority in the jungle. ### [Bolgani](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/bolgani) _friendship_ Bolgani, a great ape, is a loyal friend and ally to Tarzan, often aiding him in the wild. ### [Manu](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/manu) _friendship_ Manu, a monkey, is a playful and loyal companion to Tarzan, often providing comic relief and help. ### [Fahd Ibn Jad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/fahd_ibn_jad) _rivalry_ Fahd and Tarzan are antagonists, clashing over power and territory in the jungle. ### [James Hunter Blake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/james_hunter_blake) _friendship_ James and Tarzan are steadfast friends and allies, working together to overcome common threats. ### [Zeyd Ibn Jad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/zeyd_ibn_jad) _rivalry_ Tarzan and Zeyd are opponents, with Zeyd often challenging Tarzan's authority in the jungle. ### [James Hunter Blake](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/james_hunter_blake) _friendship_ James and Tarzan are steadfast friends and allies, working together to overcome common threats. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ Nasrany and Tarzan are direct enemies, with Nasrany frequently attempting to capture or kill Tarzan. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ Nasrany and Tarzan are direct enemies, with Nasrany frequently attempting to capture or kill Tarzan. ## In the story ### [I: Tantor the Elephant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/chapters/i-tantor-the-elephant) Dozes on Tantor's back, is captured by Arab hunters, confronts Ibn Jad, and is bound and threatened with death. ### [Comrades of the Wild](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/chapters/ii-comrades-of-the-wild) Captive in the Arab menzil, he communicates with Tantor and is rescued by the elephant. ### [III: The Apes of Toyat](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/chapters/iii-the-apes-of-toyat) Bound and helpless, then rescued by M'walat;
