# James Hunter Blake — Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle character guide > James Hunter Blake in Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Blake, Jim Blake, young Blake, James **First appearance:** 0000-i-tantor-the-elephant ## Snapshot A young American photographer with the good sense to respect Tarzan's jungle and the bad luck to be dragged into a valley of warring medieval knights. ## Who they are Blake is the reasonable half of an expedition gone sour, the man who listens to the porters and takes Tarzan's warnings seriously while his older partner sneers. When the safari splits, every porter chooses Blake's side — a quiet verdict on his character. His openness to the strange and his willingness to ride toward danger make him the natural lens through which the lost world of Nimmr becomes real. ## Relationships ### [Princess Guinalda](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/princess_guinalda) _romantic_ James and Princess Guinalda share a deep romantic bond, with James acting as her protector and confidant. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ James and Nasrany are bitter adversaries, with Nasrany often scheming against James and his allies. ### [Tarzan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/tarzan) _friendship_ James and Tarzan are steadfast friends and allies, working together to overcome common threats. ### [Sir Richard](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/sir_richard) _friendship_ James and Sir Richard are loyal friends and companions, often supporting each other in adventures. ### [Fahd Ibn Jad](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/fahd_ibn_jad) _rivalry_ Fahd and James are direct competitors and enemies, frequently opposing each other's goals. ### [Edward](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/edward) _friendship_ Edward is a trusted friend and ally of James, often accompanying him on expeditions. ### [Prince Gobred](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/prince_gobred) _friendship_ James and Prince Gobred are allies and friends, working together for mutual benefit. ### [Manu](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/manu) _friendship_ James and Manu share a friendly bond, with Manu often assisting James in the jungle. ### [Princess Guinalda](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/princess_guinalda) _romantic_ James and Princess Guinalda share a deep romantic bond, with James acting as her protector and confidant. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ James and Nasrany are bitter adversaries, with Nasrany often scheming against James and his allies. ### [Tarzan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/tarzan) _friendship_ James and Tarzan are steadfast friends and allies, working together to overcome common threats. ### [Nasrany Stimbol](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/characters/nasrany_stimbol) _rivalry_ James and Nasrany are bitter adversaries, with Nasrany often scheming against James and his allies. ## In the story ### [Bolgani the Gorilla](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_lord_of_the_jungle_se/chapters/iv-bolgani-the-gorilla) Blake is introduced as a young American on safari with Stimbol;
