# Mohammed Beyd — Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar character guide

> Mohammed Beyd in Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0005-vi-the-arab-raid

## Snapshot

An Arab lieutenant whose terror of the ape-man's victory cry wars with his deeper dread of Achmet Zek's displeasure.

## Who they are

Mohammed Beyd rides in Achmet Zek's raider band, a subordinate whose fear of his master outweighs even his horror of the jungle sounds that make his cowardly soul tremble. When Tarzan's bull-ape scream echoes through the trees, Beyd wants nothing more than to turn back, yet he presses on because Achmet Zek frightens him more than any unseen danger. His divided terror marks him as one of the novel's small, calculating men caught between predators far greater than himself.
