# La — Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar character guide > La in Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs. **Role:** major **Also known as:** La of Opar, Death La, the High Priestess **First appearance:** 0002-iii-the-call-of-the-jungle ## Snapshot High Priestess of the Flaming God, she would plunge a knife into Tarzan's heart or press her lips to his shoulder within the same hour. ## Who they are La rules Opar's fanatic priests and its bloodstained altar, but her authority dissolves the moment the ape-man refuses her: she offers him godhood, slaves, and her love, and he pushes her aside with a sentence. Her rage summons the Guardian Priests to wash the temple in blood, and her love follows him into the jungle where she clings to his back through the treetops. A creature of contradiction — cruel and tender, vengeful and forgiving — she is the novel's engine of jealousy, and her obsession with Tarzan threatens everyone who travels with him. ## Relationships ### [Tarzan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/tarzan) _psychological_ La, the high priestess of Opar, is obsessively in love with Tarzan and struggles between her passion and her priestly duties. ### [Albert Werper](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/albert_werper) _psychological_ Werper manipulates La's emotions and uses her obsession with Tarzan to further his own greedy plans. ### [Jane Clayton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/jane_clayton) _rivalry_ Jane and La are romantic rivals for Tarzan's affections, creating tension and conflict between them. ### [Achmet Zek](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/achmet_zek) _professional_ Achmet Zek interacts with La primarily as a fellow schemer, using her for access to Opar's treasures. ### [Tarzan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/tarzan) _psychological_ La, the high priestess of Opar, is obsessively in love with Tarzan and struggles between her passion and her priestly duties. ### [Tarzan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/tarzan) _psychological_ La, the high priestess of Opar, is obsessively in love with Tarzan and struggles between her passion and her priestly duties. ### [Jane Clayton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/jane_clayton) _rivalry_ Jane and La are romantic rivals for Tarzan's affections, creating tension and conflict between them. ### [Albert Werper](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/characters/albert_werper) _psychological_ Werper manipulates La's emotions and uses her obsession with Tarzan to further his own greedy plans. ## In the story ### [The Altar of the Flaming God](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/chapters/v-the-altar-of-the-flaming-god) High Priestess of Opar, prepares to sacrifice Werper but is interrupted by a lion. ### [VII: The Jewel-Room of Opar](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/chapters/vii-the-jewel-room-of-opar) High Priestess of Opar, regains consciousness during the lion fight and watches Tarzan's victory. ### [The Escape from Opar](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/tarzan_and_the_jewels_of_opar_se/chapters/viii-the-escape-from-opar) The High Priestess of Opar, La recognizes Tarzan and declares her love, but is rejected.
