# Chulk — Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar character guide

> Chulk in Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0015-xvi-tarzan-again-leads-the-mangani

## Snapshot

A Mangani ape of the ancient tribe that haunts Opar's ruins, bound to Tarzan by blood and the old speech of the anthropoids.

## Who they are

Chulk belongs to the great anthropoid tribe that has dwelt in and about Opar since before memory, so long that the Oparians have come to regard them almost as equals. He shares with Tarzan the rough language and instincts of the Mangani, a kinship that cuts across the gulf between jungle beast and civilized man. In a story crowded with scheming humans and fanatical priests, Chulk stands for the older, simpler order of the ape-world that Tarzan can never quite leave behind.
