## Snapshot

An Abyssinian cavalry leader who, fresh from defeat and the loss of his gold, seizes Jane Clayton as a gift for his emperor.

## Who they are

Abdul Mourak commands a file of ebony horsemen under the Emperor Menelek, and he is in no mood for appeals to justice or humanity after losing his gold, his jewels, and his prisoners. When he finds Jane Clayton hiding in a tree, he sees not a woman in distress but an acceptable gift that might temper his ruler's wrath. Waterless, hungry, and hunted by lions around his boma, he drives his dispirited company west in search of guides, carrying his captive toward a fate she has begun to believe is inevitable.
