## Who they are

Peebles is one of the four white men Flora drags into Jane's camp, part of a supposed scientific expedition whose real business is gold. By the time the safari turns, he is reduced to perching in a tree fork beside Dick Throck, while the cleverer Kraski rigs a platform and Bluber clings half-exhausted above. His helplessness measures how far the expedition has fallen from its confident beginning.
