# Baron Doppelgeist — Sylvie and Bruno character guide

> Baron Doppelgeist in Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Baron, Baron

**First appearance:** 0002-volume-i-ii-l-amie-inconnue

## Snapshot

A fat, self-styled military hero whose arrival as ambassador gives the Sub-Warden the foreign backing his schemes have been waiting for.

## Who they are

The Baron presents himself as a commander of infantry and a man of distinguished ancestry, though his vanity and appetite betray him at every turn. His offended simper when My Lady jokes about pastry and his eager trot toward dinner suggest a conspirator more interested in comfort than conquest. He matters because his embassy supplies the outside menace that turns the palace's petty corruption into something the children must eventually flee.
