Chapter 1
Dedication
The book is dedicated to the six individuals for whom it was written, in exchange for a pair of slippers.
Chapter 2
Swallows and Amazons
The Walker children—John, Susan, Titty, and Roger—are given permission by their mother to sail to Wild Cat Island for a camping trip. They prepare their boat, the Swallow, and set off on their adventure. Upon arriving at the island, they explore and discover a hidden harbour. They also encounter the Blackett sisters, Nancy and Peggy, who are the 'Amazons' and claim the island as their own. A friendly rivalry begins, leading to plans for a challenge involving a letter from Captain Flint.
Chapter 3
The Peak in Darien
Roger, the youngest of the Walker children, receives a telegram from his father granting permission for the children to sail and camp on their own. The telegram reads 'Better drowned than duffers if not duffers wont drown.' The children, gathered at their camp on a promontory they call Darien, celebrate the news and begin planning their voyage, creating ship's articles and a list of supplies.
Chapter 4
II: Making Ready
The Walker family prepares for their camping expedition. Mother finishes sewing two simple tents, which are tested in the garden. The children then go to the boathouse to ready their sailboat, the Swallow, with mother's help. They step the mast and hoist the sail, while Titty and Roger whistle for wind. The chapter ends with a calm lake and anticipation for the voyage to Wild Cat Island.
Chapter 5
III: The Voyage to the Island
The Walker children load the Swallow with supplies for their camping expedition, including food, tents, blankets, and haybags for mattresses. After arranging for Mr. Jackson to bring the haybags by rowboat, they say goodbye to their mother, nurse, and baby Vicky. They set sail with a light northwesterly wind, singing 'Spanish Ladies.' During the voyage, they navigate around Wild Cat Island, carefully exploring its shores for a suitable landing place. They find a small pebbly bay on the eastern side, and after sailing around the island to confirm it is the only viable spot, they land there, with Roger jumping ashore with the painter.
