# Rev. Dean Drone — Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town character guide > Rev. Dean Drone in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town by Stephen Leacock. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Dean Drone, Rural Dean Drone, The Dean, the Dean, the Rural Dean **First appearance:** 0001-sunshine-sketches-of-a-little-town ## Snapshot Mariposa's absent-minded Rural Dean, a Greek-reading clergyman whose forty-year ministry and buried literary ambitions make him the town's gentlest and most quietly conflicted soul. ## Who they are Dean Drone has served the Church of England in Mariposa for four decades, spending his afternoons beneath the plum trees with Theocritus and his evenings wrestling with sermons he can never quite finish. He is writing a letter of resignation, but the words keep slipping away from him, revealing a man torn between duty and a long-suppressed desire to be something more than a country parson. His struggle matters because it quietly anchors the town's spiritual life and shows how even the most settled lives in Mariposa conceal unspoken yearnings. ## Relationships ### [Henry Mullins](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/henry_mullins) _professional_ Henry Mullins is a prominent businessman and church trustee who works closely with Reverend Dean Drone on church and community affairs. ### [Dr. Gallagher](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/dr_gallagher) _friendship_ Dr. Gallagher is the town doctor and a close friend of Reverend Dean Drone, often sharing meals and conversations. ### [Peter Pupkin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/peter_pupkin) _social_ Peter Pupkin is a young bank clerk who interacts with Reverend Dean Drone as a member of the church community. ### [Mallory Tompkins](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/mallory_tompkins) _social_ Mallory Tompkins is a churchgoer and community member who interacts with Reverend Dean Drone in a social capacity. ### [Mr. Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/mr_smith) _social_ Mr. Smith and Reverend Dean Drone have a cordial relationship as community leaders, though their worlds differ. ### [Mr. Gingham](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/mr_gingham) _social_ Mr. Gingham is a parishioner who interacts with Reverend Dean Drone in church and community settings. ### [Henry Mullins](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/characters/henry_mullins) _professional_ Henry Mullins is a prominent businessman and church trustee who works closely with Reverend Dean Drone on church and community affairs. ## In the story ### [Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/chapters/sunshine-sketches-of-a-little-town) Introduced as the local clergyman. ### [The Hostelry of Mr. Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/chapters/i-the-hostelry-of-mr-smith) Rural Dean of the Church of England Church; seen going home to get his fishing rod; occasionally steps into the hotel rotunda to collect subscriptions. ### [The Speculations of Jefferson Thorpe](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/chapters/ii-the-speculations-of-jefferson-thorpe) Mentioned as having to change his sermon after the mining boom and Fizzlechip's funeral. ### [The Marine Excursions of the Knights of Pythias](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sunshine_sketches_of_a_little_town_se/chapters/iii-the-marine-excursions-of-the-knights-of-pythias) Manages the races on the island, serves as Chaplain of the Order, and brings fishing gear and his daughter Lilian to the excursion. ### [IV: The Ministrations of the Rev.
