## Who they are

Liff Hyatt belongs to the rough mountain settlement Charity has spent her life trying to rise above, yet he is also the one thread that might lead back to her origins. He is wary and inarticulate, uneasy when Charity presses him to carry a message to Bash Hyatt, and he answers her urgency with a shrug and a warning not to come on a Sunday. His brief presence opens the question of her parentage that shadows the whole book.
