Concepts
Ideas that structure Such Is Life by Joseph Furphy — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Hierarchy
The book extensively examines the rigid social stratification of Australian station life, from the manager's house to the men's hut, and the tensions between wage-slaves, squatters, and officials, often using biblical and feudal analogies.
Determinism vs. Free Will
The narrator repeatedly contrasts theories of cosmic determinism (Original Impress) with individual agency, framing his own unemployment and life events as either predestined or the result of personal choice and 'hitches.'
The Nature of Truth and Narrative
Collins insists on being a 'chronicler' rather than a 'romancer,' claiming 'limpid veracity' and a memory that stereotypes impressions, while self-consciously breaking narrative conventions and mocking literary propriety.
Masculinity and Labor
The book portrays a rugged, homosocial world of bullock drivers, drovers, and boundary riders, where physical endurance, practical knowledge, and a stoic acceptance of hardship define manhood, contrasted with effete 'whalers' or gentlemen.
Colonial Australian Identity
Set in Riverina, the narrative explores the unique landscape, vernacular, and social codes of the Australian outback, including the tension between European heritage (Shakespeare, Bible) and the raw, unromantic reality of bush life.
Fate and Coincidence
Collins frequently notes the 'cussedness' or 'strange fatality' that drives him back to places like Runnymede, emphasizing the role of chance, unintended consequences, and the ironic twists of 'such is life.'
Hypocrisy and Moral Judgment
The narrator satirizes societal hypocrisy, from the 'noxious affectation' of bathing descriptions in literature to the double standards of station owners and the self-righteousness of the 'respectable' classes.
The Philosophy of Observation
Collins advocates for a detached, almost Zen-like state of 'mental sabbath' and passive observation, using his pipe as a tool for ethical contemplation and finding wisdom in the mundane details of daily life.
