A Veep of considerable rank whose presence on the safari carries political weight, and whose mind may not survive whatever waits in the valley.

## Who they are

Milfors Wass travels with the hunting party as a man of consequence, his authority and his man watching the woods with an attention Hume finds worth noting. By the time the Patrol collects him he is a witless, dazed creature still under the mental influence of whoever set the trap, and his ruined state becomes the measure of what the expedition stumbled into. His fate shadows the survivors' reckonings with the Patrol.
