# Doctor Meyers — Spoon River Anthology character guide

> Doctor Meyers in Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0025-doctor-meyers

## Snapshot

The physician who eased Spoon River's secret emergencies in the dark—and now must answer for every mercy the town demanded but would not name.

## Who they are

Doctor Meyers is the town's medical man, the one people came to when a situation could not be spoken aloud. His practice entangled him in the private crises of Spoon River's women and families, making him both necessary and quietly condemned. His epitaph exposes the gap between what a community asks a doctor to do and what it is willing to admit afterward—a tension that shadows several of the early graves.
