Spoon River Anthology

Chapter 4
The Hill
The poem reflects on the lives and deaths of various Spoon River residents, both men and women, who now lie buried on the hill. It catalogs their diverse fates—illness, accident, violence, imprisonment, childbirth, heartbreak, and old age—and ends with the lingering memory of Fiddler Jones, who lived fully and recalls past joys and even a remark by Abraham Lincoln.
Chapter 5
Hod Putt
Hod Putt, a man weary of poverty and labor, observes the corrupt success of Old Bill Piersol, who profited through dishonest means and the bankruptcy law. In desperation, Hod robs and accidentally kills a traveler, for which he is executed. He draws a parallel between his own fate and Old Bill's, noting that both found peace in the grave.
