## Who they are

Hayward belongs to the depot-laying party that must haul supplies across the Barrier with too little food, clothing, and equipment. When scurvy strikes the group, he is among those whose lives depend on the unremitting care of Joyce, Wild, and Richards, who drag the stricken men through deep snow and blizzards. His presence in the ranks gives the long march its human stakes, and his loss is one the survivors carry.
