## Who they are

Worsley commands the ship that Shackleton drives into the pack, and when the ice finally takes her he becomes the man who must find land by sextant and instinct alone. He is a sailor of the old school, at home among the whaling captains who swap stories of the sullen southern seas, and his appetite for the impossible matches his captain's. His navigation of the small boats is the thread on which the entire party's survival hangs.
