Chapter 2
South!

Chapter 3
Into the Weddell Sea
The Endurance departs South Georgia on December 5, 1914, heading into the Weddell Sea. Shackleton describes the harsh ice conditions, the advice from whaling captains, and the early encounter with pack ice far north. The crew prepares for the challenges ahead, with dogs aboard and plans for wintering or landing on the continent.
Chapter 4
New Land
The Endurance sails into open water after navigating heavy pack ice, sighting new land (Coats' Land) discovered by Dr. W. S. Bruce. The ship encounters loose pack ice again and eventually becomes firmly beset in the Weddell Sea. The crew prepares for a prolonged stay by moving dogs onto the floe, building igloos, and engaging in recreational activities while waiting for the ice to release the ship.
Chapter 5
Winter Months
The Endurance remains trapped in the pack ice through the Antarctic winter. The crew endures increasing pressure from the ice, which grinds and cracks around the ship. They prepare for emergencies, maintain the dogs, and continue scientific observations. The sun disappears for 79 days, and the floe eventually breaks up in August, forcing the dogs and sledges aboard. The ship withstands severe pressure but remains trapped, drifting with the ice.
