Songs of the Cattle Trail and Cow Camp · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure Songs of the Cattle Trail and Cow Camp by John A. Lomax — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Freedom and Independence
The book celebrates the cowboy's love for the open range, the saddle, and the untamed West, contrasting it with the constraints of civilization, fences, and city life.
Nostalgia and Loss
A recurring theme is the lament for the passing of the old West, with poems mourning the encroachment of fences, railroads, and 'progress' that erode the cowboy's way of life.
Masculinity and Bravado
Cowboy identity is tied to physical prowess, toughness, and boastful tales of riding, roping, and fighting, often with a humorous or exaggerated tone.
Love and Romance
Romantic relationships are depicted through courtship, longing, and heartbreak, often using ranch and cattle metaphors (roping, branding, corralling) to express affection.
Solitude and Reflection
The isolation of the cowboy's life leads to introspection, encounters with nature, and moments of spiritual or moral contemplation, as seen in poems about being alone with God or one's conscience.
Violence and Justice
Themes of outlawry, vigilante justice, and the harsh code of the frontier appear in ballads about hangings, shootouts, and the conflict between law and personal loyalty.
Nature and the Landscape
The Western landscape—prairies, deserts, mountains, and storms—is vividly described as both beautiful and dangerous, shaping the cowboy's identity and daily struggles.
Community and Camaraderie
Strong bonds among cowboys are highlighted through shared work, dances, yarns, and loyalty, with the dedication and many poems emphasizing friendship and mutual support.
