# How does Songs of a Sourdough develop the theme of Gold Rush and Greed?

> Songs of a Sourdough by Robert W. Service

## Answer

Songs of a Sourdough by Robert W. Service develops Gold Rush and Greed across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The pursuit of gold is depicted as a consuming, often destructive obsession that drives men to gamble their lives, fortunes, and morals, frequently leading to ruin rather than fulfillment.

The poem details the mad rush for gold on Bonanza Creek, the squandering of fortunes, and the moral decay of Dawson City.

The speaker initially sought gold, but ultimately finds the allure of the land itself more compelling than wealth.

The waves tell of men who 'sally in quest of gold' only to sink in an ocean grave, highlighting the peril of greed.
