## Who they are

Sandbach is the sort of country gentleman who owns the links, keeps the caddy, and treats public order as a personal inconvenience. When the suffrage demonstrators scatter across his sandhills, he yelps after them like a dog, more indignant than dangerous, while his guests and their boys join the rat-hunt. He matters less as a plot agent than as a specimen: the complacent, well-fed England against which Christopher Tietjens's stubborn decencies are measured.
