## Who they are

A former governess turned novelist, Mrs. Wannop keeps a modest household where her daughter Valentine does the housemaid's work between suffrage demonstrations. Her genteel poverty — the Professor's death, the cheap cottage, the borrowed respectability — sits uneasily beside the causes her daughter champions in public. She matters because the Wannop household is the moral counterweight to the Tietjens establishment: shabby, clever, unpropertied, and unimpressed by rank.
