# Lady Claudine Sandbach — Some Do Not … character guide

> Lady Claudine Sandbach in Some Do Not … by Ford Madox Ford.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lady Claudine, Claudine, Claudine Sandbach

**First appearance:** 0000-part-i-i

## Snapshot

Sandbach's wife, a sharp-tongued socialite whose golf-party world of gossip and propriety makes her a quiet arbiter of who is ruined and who is not.

## Who they are

Lady Claudine presides over the social machinery of the Rye golf party — the dinners, the pairings, the talk that decides reputations. She is not cruel so much as fluent in the currency of scandal, and her judgments of Sylvia and of the Tietjens marriage carry real weight in the circles that matter. She matters because the novel's private tragedies are always being processed, in the background, by women like her.
