## Who they are

Campion moves through golf courses, War Office corridors, and country houses with the ease of a man who has never had to explain himself. He is fond of Christopher Tietjens and exasperated by him in equal measure, unable to square the brilliant civil servant with the man who dines with Cabinet ministers and tells them to go to hell. His patronage — and his incomprehension — frame the novel's question of whether integrity can survive inside the English establishment.
