## Who they are

Father Consett — enormous mouth, dirty hands, a laugh like a steam roundabout — is the one person Sylvia cannot perform for. He is a saint in the world's eyes and a shrewd judge of character in his own, and his scenes with Sylvia in the German hotel expose the marriage's cruelties more nakedly than any argument between the spouses. His presence gives the novel its Catholic counter-voice: unillusioned, humane, and unimpressed by either Tietjens rectitude or Sylvia's beauty.
