> Smoky the Cowhorse by Will James

## Answer

Smoky the Cowhorse by Will James develops The Human-Animal Bond across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book centers on the deep, mutual respect and loyalty between a horse and a good cowboy, arguing that a person's character is revealed by how they treat animals.

The early, subtle connection between Clint and Smoky hints at the deep bond that will develop through trust and training.

Though no humans are present, the chapter emphasizes the natural bond between Smoky and his mother, and later the old buckskin horse, setting the stage for future human connections.

The chapter sets the stage for the eventual bond between Smoky and Clint, beginning with fear and curiosity as Smoky watches the human ride and control a horse.
