# Old Tom — Smoky the Cowhorse character guide

> Old Tom in Smoky the Cowhorse by Will James.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Tom

**First appearance:** 0003-ii-smoky-meets-the-human

## Snapshot

An experienced ranch hand who works the outfit alongside Clint and Jeff, one of the many men whose labor shapes the world Smoky enters.

## Who they are

Old Tom belongs to the working texture of the Rocking R, one of the riders whose days are measured in circles, remudas, and the long rhythm of the roundup. He is not the story's center, but he is part of the human weather that Smoky must learn to read, another set of hands and habits in a world that runs on them. His presence grounds the book in the ordinary competence of ranch life, the kind of men who make a horse's education possible.
