Chapter 1
I: The Magnet Attracting: A Waif Amid Forces
Carrie Meeber, an eighteen-year-old girl from Columbia City, boards a train for Chicago in August 1889 with only four dollars and her sister's address. On the train, she meets Charles Drouet, a charming traveling salesman who flatters her, shows off his wealth, and arranges to see her again. Upon arrival, she is met by her sister Minnie Hanson, and the contrast between Drouet's glamorous world and her sister's grim life of toil becomes starkly apparent.

II: What Poverty Threatened: Of Granite and Brass
Carrie arrives at her sister Minnie's small flat in Chicago, where she is confronted with the harsh realities of poverty and the relentless cycle of labor. She observes the cramped, poorly furnished home and the subdued, industrious lives of Minnie and her husband Hanson. Realizing that her flirtation with Drouet cannot continue in this environment, she writes him a letter asking him not to visit. The next morning, she sets out to find work, wandering through the imposing, industrial cityscape of Chicago, feeling overwhelmed and insignificant amid its vast commercial power.

III: We Question of Fortune: Four-Fifty a Week
Carrie Meeber, newly arrived in Chicago, spends a long day seeking employment. She is overwhelmed by the dazzling displays in department stores and feels the sting of poverty as she compares herself to well-dressed women. After several rejections and humiliations, she finally secures a job at a shoe factory for four and a half dollars a week, which revives her spirits and gives her hope for a better life in the city.

IV: The Spendings of Fancy: Facts Answer with Sneers
Carrie begins her new job at a shoe factory, but the harsh realities of factory work—long hours, crude coworkers, and a sordid environment—shatter her romantic fantasies of city life. At home, her sister Minnie and brother-in-law Hanson's frugal, joyless existence further dampen her spirits, leaving her torn between her desire for pleasure and the grim facts of her circumstances.
Chapter 5
V: A Glittering Night Flower: The Use of a Name
Drouet spends an evening at Rector's restaurant and Fitzgerald and Moy's saloon, where he meets and converses with Hurstwood, the manager. The chapter contrasts Drouet's superficial pursuit of pleasure and status with Hurstwood's established but limited success, and reflects on the allure and emptiness of glittering urban nightlife.
