## Snapshot

A kind, bewildered grocer's wife whose only son is in danger, she listens to Fleurette's secrets with grief and unspoken doubt.

## Who they are

Ma'ame Colombe keeps the épicerie and the anxieties of a mother whose son has vanished into revolutionary custody. When Fleurette confesses to hiding valuables and giving them to Amédé, her perplexity and grief nearly break the girl's resolve — she cannot condemn, but she cannot understand either. Her worried, trusting presence grounds the early chapters in the ordinary domestic world that the Terror is tearing apart.
