# Mr. Lonsdale — Sinister Street character guide

> Mr. Lonsdale in Sinister Street by Compton Mackenzie.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lonsdale, young Lonsdale

**First appearance:** 0004-i-the-new-world

## Snapshot

A schoolmaster at Michael's preparatory school, sharing the famous rooms at 202 High Street, whose presence hovers over Michael's school days with a mixture of authority and unease.

## Who they are

Lonsdale belongs to the storied lodging at 202 High Street—the old cardinal's palace with carved oak fireplaces and silver rumored stolen from a college kitchen—where Michael and his friends hold court among generations of transitory exquisites. As a master, he occupies the ambiguous space between the boys' world and the institution's, part of the machinery of school life that shapes Michael's early sense of order, hierarchy, and belonging. His significance lies in what he represents: the adult world Michael must learn to navigate without losing himself.
