A spectacled, pear-faced visitor in grey flannel who lectures Michael on science, health, and the coming doom of public schools, embodying everything the boy finds unendurably modern.

## Who they are

Garrod corners Michael at the Abbey with intimate questions about his physical well-being and invitations to Hornsey, pressing polytechnical knowledge and little books on a boy who only wants the books he finds himself. He attacks public schools, champions Science and Religion together, and calls false modesty the worst enemy—all with a cockney complacency Michael finds obscene. He is the first real antagonist of Michael's inner life, the voice of a new England that threatens the gentility Michael has inherited.
