# Lily Haden — Sinister Street character guide > Lily Haden in Sinister Street by Compton Mackenzie. **Role:** major **Also known as:** April, Lily April, Lily Sonata **First appearance:** 0030-xvii-lily ## Snapshot A delicate figure from Michael's Kensington Gardens childhood, Lily draws him across London into a shadow-world of the Seven Sisters Road, where desire and dread become indistinguishable. ## Who they are Five years after their first meeting, Lily reappears to Michael with her contours unblunted by time, and the quest for her becomes a deliberate withdrawal from his familiar world. His cab ride toward Neptune Crescent turns Kentish Town and the Hampstead Road into an underworld of yellow omnibuses, chalked skeletons, and Jack the Ripper memories. She is the pull toward everything his upbringing warned against—and the test of whether his romantic idealism can survive contact with real London. ## Relationships ### [Michael Fane](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/michael_fane) _romantic_ Lily is Michael's passionate and troubled lover, their relationship marked by intense emotional highs and destructive conflicts. ### [Sylvia Scarlett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/sylvia_scarlett) _rivalry_ Lily and Sylvia are rivals for Michael's affection, their interactions marked by jealousy and mutual disdain. ### [Michael Fane](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/michael_fane) _romantic_ Lily is Michael's passionate and troubled lover, their relationship marked by intense emotional highs and destructive conflicts. ### [Michael Fane](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/michael_fane) _romantic_ Lily is Michael's passionate and troubled lover, their relationship marked by intense emotional highs and destructive conflicts. ### [Sylvia Scarlett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/sylvia_scarlett) _rivalry_ Lily and Sylvia are rivals for Michael's affection, their interactions marked by jealousy and mutual disdain. ### [Sylvia Scarlett](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/characters/sylvia_scarlett) _rivalry_ Lily and Sylvia are rivals for Michael's affection, their interactions marked by jealousy and mutual disdain. ## In the story ### [Sinister Street](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/chapters/sinister-street) A figure of romantic obsession and allure in Michael's life. ### [XVI: Blue Eyes](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/sinister_street_se/chapters/xvi-blue-eyes) First appears in the chapter;
