    II: How He Grew to Manhood

    Simon grows from page to squire under Fulk of Montlice, developing into a formidable young man known for his cold composure, ruthless justice, and unyielding will. He earns respect through strength and fairness, often clashing with Fulk but ultimately winning his admiration. Simon also observes his father, Geoffrey of Malvallet, for the first time, feeling neither enthusiasm nor displeasure.
